The home build is about balancing two loud meats: proper salami, decent pepperoni, and restraint on everything except the salad.
The sub
Salad and finish
Water or a zero sugar drink. Anything salty on the side would be piling on.
The Subway Spicy Italian costs £7.39 and lands at 498 kcal in a six inch, which makes it the heaviest of the classic cold cut subs and the most flavour per bite on that side of the menu. Pepperoni and salami, doubled up, with no ham to calm them down.
The build is the Classic B.M.T. with the polite part removed. Both meats are cured, fatty and peppery, laid overlapping so every bite gets both, and then the counter choices follow: bread, cheese, the free salad rail, sauce. Cheese is practically standard here because it is the only thing in the sandwich not shouting.
The taste is big, salty and warm with pepper rather than hot with chilli, despite the name. The fat in the two meats turns silky against toasted bread, which is why this sub gains more from toasting than almost anything on the board. It is rich enough that the salad stops being decoration and starts being relief.
It suits the days when flavour is the whole point, and it is the pick for people who find the B.M.T. restrained. The honest catch is the panel: nothing on the Sandwiches menu with published figures carries more salt or more fat than this. That is what two cured meats cost. Order it knowingly, and maybe not daily.
The Classic B.M.T. is the obvious sibling: add ham, lose a little intensity, same price. Going the other way, the Meatball Marinara matches it for indulgence but hot and saucy instead of cold and cured. The Spicy Italian is the strongest statement of the three.
On value it holds up: mid range price for the most filling flavour on the cold side, and a toasted footlong is a serious meal. Pair it with water rather than adding a salty side; the sandwich has your day's sodium ambitions covered on its own.

It starts at £7.39 for a six inch on the collection menu, the same price point as the Classic B.M.T. it closely resembles.
498 kcal for a six inch on the standard build, before extra cheese. It is the heaviest of the classic cold cut subs, which is the price of doubling the cured meat.
Warm with pepper rather than hot with chilli. The name oversells the heat. Jalapenos or crushed chillies at the counter close the gap if you want it to live up to the label.
The B.M.T. adds ham to the same pepperoni and salami, which softens the whole sandwich. The Spicy Italian is the louder, saltier, fattier version at the same price.
Wheat in the bread, milk in added cheese, and cured meats commonly carry soya. The build changes the answer, so check the Subway allergen guide or ask in store.
