£7.39+Honey Mustard Deli Toastie
£2.79Coca-Cola Zero 500mlA honey mustard toastie is a five minute job once the sauce is mixed, and the sauce takes one.
The toastie
Honey mustard
With soup, which is what a toastie was invented for.
The Subway Honey Mustard Deli Toastie costs £7.39 and comes to 362 kcal, which makes it both the cheapest and the lightest of the three toasties. It is the entry point to a very short range, and the most restrained thing in it.
A toastie differs from a toasted sub in that it is built to go through the oven rather than sent through on request. That means the cheese quantity and the sauce are chosen to melt together, and the bread is expected to come out firm rather than merely warm. Deli meat and honey mustard is the mildest combination Subway puts through that process.
The taste is savoury with the sweet-sharp lift honey mustard gives, and the texture is the point of the whole format: a crust with some structure, melted cheese underneath, and filling that has warmed through rather than just been heated. It eats hotter and firmer than any toasted sub does.
It suits a cold day and anyone who finds the other two toasties too rich. The catch is the range itself, which is only three items deep, so if this combination does not appeal there is nowhere else to go inside the category.
Against the rest of the menu the honest comparison is a toasted sandwich from the Sandwiches menu, which costs less and is free to toast. What you gain here is a build designed around the oven rather than adapted to it, and about a pound is what that costs.
On value it is the sensible one: cheapest of three, lightest of three, and a proper hot lunch. If you are trying the toastie format for the first time, this is the one that tells you whether the format is for you without committing to the richest version of it.
